HTTPS certificates (SSL/TLS)

Updated 9 hours ago 1 views

Every site on our hosting can use HTTPS with a free certificate from Let's Encrypt. Visitors then see the padlock in their browser, and their connection to your site is encrypted. The SSL/TLS tile in the Control Panel shows each site's certificate: who issued it and how many days it is still valid.

Turning HTTPS on

  1. Make sure the domain points to our servers: the DNS check tile tells you. See Point a domain to our servers.
  2. Under SSL/TLS, press Enable HTTPS next to the site.
  3. The certificate is issued automatically, usually within a minute. Visitors who use http:// are then sent to https://.

If the site also has a www. name that points to us, it is included in the same certificate.

Renewal

Let's Encrypt certificates are valid for 90 days and renew automatically well before they expire. You do not have to do anything. Renew certificate renews one by hand, for example after you added a www. record.

If issuing fails

  • "A certificate can only be issued once the domain points to our servers": the domain's DNS still points elsewhere, or the change has not spread yet. Check the DNS check tile, and try again after a while.
  • The request's details under Requests say what went wrong. Contact us if it is not clear.

After switching to HTTPS

  • If your site has its own address setting (WordPress: Settings, General), change it to https://.
  • Links to images or scripts with http:// cause "mixed content" warnings: change them to https:// or to relative links.
