Read your website's error logs

When a page shows an error, a blank page or 500 Internal Server Error, the reason is usually in the error logs. The Error logs tile in the Control Panel shows the latest lines of both logs for each of your sites:

  • Web server errors: what the web server noted for this site, such as missing files or refused requests
  • PHP errors for your account: errors and warnings of your PHP code, for all sites of your account

Choose the site at the top. The newest lines are at the bottom. The logs are collected every few minutes, so a very recent error may take a moment to appear.

Reading an entry

A PHP error usually names the file and line where it happened, for example

PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted ... in /home/.../wp-content/plugins/... on line 123
  • Allowed memory size exhausted: raise Memory per request under Change PHP settings, or find the plugin that needs so much.
  • Call to undefined function or Class not found: often a plugin or theme that needs a newer or older PHP than the one shown under PHP settings.
  • Permission denied: a file or folder cannot be read or written; check it with your SFTP program.
  • File does not exist: a link or image points to a file that is not there.

Good to know

  • Errors are written to the log even when they are not shown in the page. Turn Show errors in the page on only briefly, for troubleshooting.
  • If the error logs do not help, send us the address of the failing page, the time it happened and the log lines: Getting help from our support team.
