NetBox network documentation

Updated 11 hours ago 3 views

Our NetBox product is a NetBox server that runs on our servers just for you. NetBox is an open-source application for documenting networks: sites, racks, devices, cables, IP addresses and prefixes, VLANs, circuits and virtual machines, and how they connect. You use it in your web browser and through its REST and GraphQL APIs. (NetBox is open-source software developed by NetBox Labs and its community; Maplegrove Hosting is not affiliated with NetBox Labs.)

Ordering

NetBox costs $8 a month, or $80 a year when paid annually (two months free), with no setup fee. Each server has its own PostgreSQL database with 2 GB of storage, and 1 GB for uploaded images, scripts and reports; ask us if you need more.

When you order, you choose your NetBox's address: its first part, such as smith for https://smith.apps.maplegrovehosting.com. It may use lower-case letters, digits and hyphens, up to 32 characters; some names are reserved (such as www, mail or admin), and it cannot be changed later. Once the order is paid, your server is set up automatically, with its own address and HTTPS certificate. Its very first start prepares the database, which takes a few more minutes; until then the address shows an error page.

Your NetBox has a page of its own in the Control Panel of your client area, with its address and status: see Manage your container apps.

Signing in for the first time

Your NetBox starts with one administrator account, admin, with a password we generate for it. You show that password once, in the Control Panel:

  1. Open your NetBox's page in the Control Panel and choose Address and setup. Under Administrator sign-in, press Show the initial password (the button appears once the first start is done). Save the password in your password manager: it is shown this once, and it cannot be shown again, by you or by our staff.
  2. Open your NetBox's address in a browser and sign in as admin with that password.
  3. Change the password at once: your name at the top right, Profile, then the Password tab. Choose a long password of your own.
  4. Create an account for each person who will use NetBox (Admin, Authentication, Users), with the permissions they need. You can rename or remove admin once you have another administrator.

If the initial password is lost before you saved it, or you lose every administrator password, contact us (see Getting help from our support team): we set a new password for the account you name, and you show it once in the Control Panel, the same way.

API tokens

Each user creates their own API tokens in NetBox, in the menu under their user name, API Tokens. NetBox shows a token only once, when it is created, and keeps only a fingerprint of it. Scripts and tools send it as Authorization: Bearer nbt_... to https://<your address>/api/.

Good to know

  • We keep NetBox up to date (currently NetBox 4.7). Updates keep your data; your NetBox is offline for a few minutes while one is applied.
  • Webhooks and data sources can reach addresses on the Internet over HTTP and HTTPS (ports 80 and 443). Your NetBox cannot reach private networks, and it does not send e-mail; ask us if you need e-mail from it.
  • Custom scripts run on your NetBox server, with its 1 GB of file storage; uploaded scripts are kept with your files.
  • Times are shown in UTC. Ask us if you want another time zone.
  • We copy your database every day and take storage snapshots every 6 hours. Still, export what matters to you from time to time (NetBox's Export buttons), and always before you use Reset on its page in the Control Panel: a reset sets NetBox up again from scratch, empty, with a new initial password, which you show once under Address and setup.
  • If your NetBox does not open, check its page in the Control Panel first (start it if it is paused), then contact us with its address.
