Vaultwarden password manager

Updated 2 days ago 10 views

Our Vaultwarden product is a password manager server that runs on our servers just for you: a private vault for your passwords, passkeys, notes and other secrets. Vaultwarden is compatible with Bitwarden, so you use it with the official Bitwarden apps and browser extensions. (Vaultwarden is an independent open-source project, not associated with Bitwarden, Inc.)

Ordering

Vaultwarden costs $8 a month, or $80 a year when paid annually (two months free), with no setup fee. Each vault includes 1 GB of storage for its items, attachments and Sends; ask us if you need more.

When you order, you choose your vault's address: its first part, such as smith for https://smith.apps.maplegrovehosting.com. It may use lower-case letters, digits and hyphens, up to 32 characters; some names are reserved (such as www, mail or admin), and it cannot be changed later. Once the order is paid, your vault is set up automatically, with its own address and HTTPS certificate. This usually takes a few minutes.

Your vault has a page of its own in the Control Panel of your client area, with its address and status: see Manage your container apps.

Getting started

  1. Open your vault's address in a browser and choose Create account.
  2. Choose a strong master password and write it down somewhere safe: your vault is encrypted with it, so it cannot be recovered, not even by us.
  3. Install the Bitwarden apps you want (browser extension, phone, desktop). In each, before signing in, choose the self-hosted server setting and enter your vault's address.
  4. When everyone who should use your vault has an account, ask us to close registration, so that nobody else can sign up on it: see Getting help from our support team.

Sharing with family or a team

Create an organization in the web vault (New organization) and invite people to it; what you share goes into its collections. People you invite can create their account on your vault even after registration is closed.

Good to know

  • Your vault is encrypted on your devices before anything reaches our servers; we cannot read its contents.
  • Turn on two-step login in the vault's settings (Security, Two-step login), with an authenticator app or a security key such as a YubiKey.
  • Your vault sends e-mail through our mail server: invitations to your organization, notices of sign-ins from new devices and, if you choose them, two-step login codes by e-mail.
  • Browser extensions and the web vault show changes from your other devices right away; the phone apps when you open them or pull down to sync.
  • Your vault has 1 GB of storage for its items, file attachments and Sends. Contact us if you need more.
  • We back up your vault every day. Still, export it from time to time (Tools, Export vault) and keep the file in a safe place, and always before you use Reset on its page in the Control Panel: a reset sets it up again from scratch.
  • If your vault does not open, check its page in the Control Panel first (start it if it is paused), then contact us with its address.
