Your container apps, such as Vaultwarden, are backed up for you, and you can make a backup yourself and put an app back to an earlier point. Open the app's page in the Control Panel (see Manage your container apps) and choose Backups.
Restore points
Backups lists the app's restore points, newest first, with the date and time each was made, its size and its kind:
| Kind | What it is |
|---|---|
| Daily, Weekly (or Scheduled) | made by the schedule (see below) |
| Manual | a backup you made with Back up now |
| Before restore | made by itself just before a restore, so that the restore can be undone (the newest 3 are kept) |
| Before evacuation | made when we move the apps to our other data centre |
| Snapshot | a copy on the app servers' own disks, made every 6 hours (the newest 8 are kept) |
Kept says where a point is: an off-site backup is kept in our backup store, away from the app servers; a snapshot is kept on the cluster, the app servers themselves. Snapshots protect you from mistakes, off-site backups also from the loss of the servers.
Back up now
Back up now makes a backup of the app as it is now (a Manual restore point). The app keeps running, and the backup is ready within a minute or two. You can make one every 10 minutes; the newest 5 of your own are kept, the oldest is replaced. The button says when the next one can be made.
Schedule
Choose Daily (the newest 14 are kept; the default), Weekly (the newest 8 are kept) or Off, and Save schedule. Snapshots are made every 6 hours whatever you choose.
Restore
- Next to a restore point, choose Restore.
- Read what happens, type the app's address (such as
smith.apps.maplegrovehosting.com) to confirm, and choose Restore.
The app is offline while it is restored: a minute or two for a small app, longer for a large one. The page shows the progress and updates by itself; meanwhile the app cannot be started, paused or reset. When the restore is done, the app is back in the state it was in (running or paused), with its data as it was at the restore point: everything changed in the app since then is replaced.
Before every restore a Before restore point is made of the app as it was. To undo a restore, restore that point.
For a password manager such as Vaultwarden a restore puts the whole vault back, for everyone who uses it: passwords saved after the restore point are gone afterwards. To keep them, export the vault first (in the vault: Tools, Export vault).
Delete
Delete removes a restore point you made yourself (Manual). Scheduled backups, snapshots and the points made before a restore are removed by themselves once they are no longer kept.
Good to know
- Backups can be made and restored while the service is active. While it is suspended you can still see them.
- During maintenance, for example while we move the apps to our other data centre, the page says so, and backups and restores wait until it is done (usually a few minutes).
- A restore that did not complete is shown on the page, and the app is set back to the state it was in. If it does not work as before, contact us: Getting help from our support team.
